TechSmart LLC ("we," "us," or "our") operates Smart Printer & Scanner (formerly True Scanner; the "app") for iPhone and iPad. This Privacy Policy explains what information the app collects, why we collect it, and the choices you have. By downloading, installing, or using the app, you agree to the practices described here. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.
Your documents stay on your device. Scanning, cropping, filters, and text recognition (OCR) all run on your iPhone or iPad. We never upload your documents, photos, scans, recognized text, or anything you print. If iCloud sync is on, your documents are kept in your own iCloud account, which we cannot access.
Printing stays on your Wi‑Fi. The app finds printers and reads their status directly on your local network, and your pages go straight from your device to your printer. We don’t collect the names, addresses, or serial numbers of devices on your network — only the make and model of printers, to improve compatibility.
1. Information We Collect
We aim to collect as little as possible. You can use the app without creating an account, and nothing you type, scan, or print is sent to us.
Information you provide
Nothing is required to use the app. We only receive information you choose to send us — for example, if you email our support team at [email protected], we will see your email address and whatever you write. Emails started from the app’s Contact us option also include the app version, the device type (such as “iPhone”), and the iOS version, so we can help you faster.
Device and usage information
When you use the app, we and our service providers automatically collect technical and usage information, such as your device model, operating system version, app version, device language, your country or region (from your App Store storefront and your approximate location based on IP address), crash and diagnostic data, and in-app events — for example, which screens and features you use, whether a scan or print was started, the type and page count of a file you print, the photo layout you choose, and whether you viewed or completed a purchase. This information does not include the contents of your documents, photos, or text.
Identifiers
- Identifier for Vendor (IDFV). An identifier Apple provides to apps from the same developer. We use it to connect your install with your App Store purchases and advertising attribution in our own records. It is not your name, email, or Apple Account.
- App-generated IDs. Our analytics provider assigns an app instance ID, Meta’s SDK assigns an anonymous app ID, and the app creates a random purchase token when it is installed. These are used to measure app usage and our advertising, and to match App Store notifications to purchases.
- Advertising identifier (IDFA). Only if you allow tracking in Apple’s App Tracking Transparency prompt can our advertising and analytics partners access your device’s IDFA (see Section 5). The app itself does not read it.
Printer information
To improve printer compatibility, the app records limited information about printers it finds — such as the make and model, the kind of printer (for example, laser or inkjet), and which kinds of status or alerts it reports. See Section 3 for exactly what is and isn’t collected.
Advertising attribution and purchases
If you installed the app from an Apple Search Ads ad, we receive attribution information from Apple (see Section 5). If you buy PRO, we receive information about the purchase (see Section 6).
2. Your Documents, Scans & Printouts
Scanning and importing. When you scan with the camera, capture happens through Apple’s document camera, and the image is processed on your device. When you import photos or files, iOS gives the app only the items you pick; the app does not browse, read, or upload the rest of your photo or file library.
On-device processing. Cropping, filters, and text recognition (OCR, using Apple’s Vision framework) run on your device. Your scans, recognized text, signatures, and the documents you create are stored on your device. We do not upload, store, analyze, or share the contents of your documents.
iCloud sync. If you are signed in to iCloud, the app keeps your documents in sync across your own Apple devices using Apple’s iCloud (CloudKit, in your private database). Sync is on by default; you can turn it off at any time in the app under Settings ▸ Backup ▸ iCloud Sync. Synced data includes your documents (page images and recognized text), folders, tags, and your QR code history; saved signatures stay on the device where you created them. This data lives in your personal iCloud account under Apple’s control — we do not host it and cannot read it. Turning sync off stops syncing but does not delete what is already in your iCloud; you can manage that storage in iOS Settings ▸ [your name] ▸ iCloud. iCloud is governed by Apple’s terms and privacy policy.
Printing. When you print, iOS sends your pages directly from your device to the printer you choose over your local network (AirPrint). Nothing you print passes through our servers. Printers show a job name — such as the document name, the first words of typed text, or a web page’s title — which may be visible to others who can see that printer’s queue or display.
Web pages you print. If you use the Web Page option to print a website, the app loads that page like a browser does, so the website (and Google, if you type words to search instead of an address) receives your request, including your IP address. The app uses a private browsing session that does not keep cookies or website data after you close it.
QR codes. The contents of QR codes you scan or create are saved in your QR history on your device (and in your iCloud, if sync is on). Actions such as opening a link, joining a Wi‑Fi network, or adding a contact or calendar event from a code only happen when you tap them. You can delete items from your history at any time.
3. Printers & Your Local Network
To find printers and show their status, the app asks for iOS’s Local Network permission. With it, the app:
- looks for printers on your Wi‑Fi network using Bonjour, the same discovery technology iOS uses (to check whether the permission is on, the app also briefly announces itself on your network);
- talks directly to the printer you choose, using standard printing protocols (IPP and SNMP), to read information such as its name and model, ink or toner levels, paper trays, alerts, and the print queue;
- checks whether the printer has a built-in settings page, and opens it only when you tap to do so.
This all happens between your device and your printer on your local network. The printer you choose is saved on your device so the app can find it again. The app looks at the print queue to recognize and follow your own print jobs; other people’s jobs are shown only as “Another print job,” and queue information never leaves your device.
What we never collect: the names, IP addresses, or MAC addresses of devices on your network, your printer’s serial number or location label, or the names of print jobs.
What our analytics record: to understand which printers work well with the app and to fix problems, analytics events may include the make and model the printer reports about itself (for example, “Brand Model 1234”), its brand, whether it is a laser or inkjet printer, whether it supports AirPrint, how many printers were found, which kinds of status it reports, and which kind of alert it shows (for example, “ink low” or “paper jam”). If you tell the app which brand of printer you have, that answer is recorded too.
You can turn Local Network access off at any time in iOS Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Local Network. You can still print — iOS shows available printers when you tap Print — but the app won’t be able to find printers for you or show their status.
4. How We Use Information
We use the information described above to:
- provide, maintain, and improve the app, including printer compatibility;
- diagnose and fix crashes and bugs;
- understand how features are used so we can make them better;
- process and verify purchases, unlock PRO, and keep subscription records;
- show ads to free users and measure how well our own advertising works;
- prevent fraud and abuse, and comply with legal obligations; and
- respond to your support requests.
We process information on the basis of our contract with you (to provide the app and PRO), our legitimate interests (to keep the app working, improve it, and measure our advertising), your consent where the law requires it (for example, tracking through Apple’s App Tracking Transparency prompt), and our legal obligations. We do not access the contents of your documents.
5. Advertising, Tracking & Measurement
Ads for free users. The free version of the app shows ads served by Google AdMob, such as banner, full-screen, and app-open ads. PRO users do not see ads. Google may collect information such as device information, your IP address, and how you interact with ads in order to serve and measure them.
App Tracking Transparency. The app asks, through Apple’s App Tracking Transparency (ATT) prompt, whether you allow tracking. If you allow it, Google (AdMob and Google Analytics for Firebase) and Meta can access your device’s advertising identifier (IDFA) to personalize ads and measure ad performance. If you don’t, the IDFA is not available to them, and ads are chosen using less specific information, such as the app you are using and your general location. You can change your choice at any time in iOS Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Tracking.
Measuring our own ads. We advertise the app on other platforms and measure which ads lead to installs and purchases:
- Apple Search Ads. The app uses Apple’s AdServices framework to find out whether you installed it from an Apple Search Ads ad. Apple returns campaign details (such as the campaign, ad group, and keyword), which we store with your install record. Apple controls this data; you can turn off personalized ads from Apple in iOS Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Apple Advertising.
- Meta. The app includes Meta’s SDK, which automatically reports app events such as installs and app launches to Meta. When you start a trial or make a purchase, our server may also report that event to Meta (the event type, time, price and currency, app and iOS version, Meta’s anonymous app ID, and whether you allowed tracking). If you haven’t allowed tracking, these events are marked that way, and Meta limits how it uses them — for example, to aggregated measurement. We never send Meta your name, email address, or document content.
- Google. Google Analytics for Firebase measures app usage, and we may send purchase and refund events to Google Analytics from our server using your app instance ID. This data may also be used to measure our advertising campaigns.
Ad networks may also use Apple’s SKAdNetwork, a privacy-preserving way to attribute installs without identifying you.
6. Purchases & Subscriptions
If you buy PRO, the purchase is processed by Apple through the App Store. We never receive or store your card number or other payment details.
To unlock PRO, keep subscription records, measure our advertising, and prevent fraud, we receive information about your purchase from the app and from Apple’s App Store Server Notifications, such as the transaction and product IDs, purchase, renewal, and expiry dates, price and currency, your App Store country, whether it was a free trial, renewal, refund, or cancellation, and the identifiers described in Section 1. We also receive internal notifications about new sales (for example, plan, price, and country) to monitor our business; these do not include your name or contact details.
7. Permissions
The app asks for access only when a feature needs it, and you can change your choices at any time in iOS Settings.
- Camera — to scan documents and read QR codes and barcodes. Images are processed on your device.
- Photos — when you import photos, a system picker gives the app only the items you select. If you choose to save a scan or image to your photo library, iOS asks for permission to add it; the app does not read your existing photos.
- Local Network — to find printers and show their status (see Section 3).
- Tracking — Apple’s App Tracking Transparency prompt (see Section 5).
- Calendars — only if you add an event from a scanned QR code. The app asks for permission to add events and does not read your calendar.
- Contacts — if you save a contact from a scanned QR code, iOS shows its standard new-contact screen; the app does not read your address book.
- Wi‑Fi networks — if you choose to join a network from a Wi‑Fi QR code, the network name and password in the code are passed to iOS, which asks you to confirm.
- Background notifications — used silently to keep iCloud sync up to date. The app does not send you notification alerts.
- Network — the app uses your internet connection for purchases, analytics, crash reports, remote configuration, advertising and attribution, iCloud sync, and web pages you choose to print.
8. Third-Party Services
We rely on a small number of service providers, each governed by its own privacy policy:
- Apple — App Store and StoreKit for purchases, App Store Server Notifications, AdServices for Apple Search Ads attribution, iCloud (CloudKit) for optional sync, and AirPrint for printing — apple.com/legal/privacy
- Google Firebase — Google Analytics for Firebase, Crashlytics (crash reports), Remote Config, Cloud Firestore and Cloud Functions (our install and purchase records) — firebase.google.com/support/privacy
- Google AdMob — ads for free users — policies.google.com/privacy (see also how Google uses information from apps that use its services)
- Meta — Meta SDK and Conversions API, to measure our advertising — facebook.com/privacy/policy
We also use messaging services to deliver the internal sales notifications described in Section 6.
9. Data Sharing & Selling
We do not sell your personal information for money, and we never share the contents of your documents. We share information with the service providers listed above so they can operate on our behalf, and where we are legally required to — for example, to comply with a valid legal request or to protect our rights and the safety of our users.
Our advertising partners receive some information for advertising purposes: Google (AdMob) receives device and ad-interaction information to serve ads to free users, and Meta receives app and purchase events to measure our ads, as described in Section 5. When you allow tracking through Apple’s App Tracking Transparency prompt, Google and Meta can also use your advertising identifier for personalized ads and ad measurement. Under the California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended by the CPRA, disclosures for cross-context behavioral advertising may be treated as "sharing" — and possibly a "sale" — of personal information. You can opt out at any time — see Section 13.
10. Data Retention
- Your documents stay on your device (and in your iCloud, if sync is on) until you delete them or the app.
- Analytics data in Google Analytics is kept for up to 14 months at the event and user level, and after that only in aggregated reports.
- Crash reports are kept by Firebase Crashlytics for a limited period, then deleted.
- Install and purchase records are kept for as long as we need them to support subscriptions, keep accounting records, prevent fraud, and measure our advertising, and as required by law. Raw attribution tokens are deleted once they have been processed.
- Support emails are kept for as long as needed to help you and to keep a record of our correspondence.
When information is no longer needed, we delete or anonymize it.
11. Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational safeguards to protect the limited information we handle, and our records are stored with our cloud provider with access limited to the people who need it. However, no method of transmission over the internet or method of electronic storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
12. Children’s Privacy
Smart Printer & Scanner is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us at [email protected] and we will delete it.
13. Your Rights & Choices
Depending on where you live (for example, in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or California), you may have the right to access the personal information we hold about you, correct it, delete it, restrict or object to its processing, receive a copy of it, and withdraw consent. California residents also have the right to opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of personal information and to limit the use of sensitive personal information (we do not use sensitive personal information).
Choices you control on your device:
- Decline tracking in Apple’s App Tracking Transparency prompt, or turn it off later in iOS Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Tracking. This is the main way to opt out of the "sharing" described in Section 9; you can also email us to opt out, and we will stop sending your purchase events to Meta.
- Turn off personalized ads from Apple in iOS Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Apple Advertising.
- Turn off Local Network access in iOS Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Local Network.
- Turn off iCloud sync in the app under Settings ▸ Backup ▸ iCloud Sync, and delete documents or QR history in the app at any time.
- Buy PRO to stop seeing ads, or delete the app to stop all collection by the app.
To exercise any other right, email us at [email protected]. Because the app has no accounts, we may ask for details that help us find the records related to your device or purchase. We will respond in accordance with applicable law and will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
14. International Transfers
We and our service providers may process and store information in countries other than the one in which you live, including the United States. Where we transfer data internationally, we rely on appropriate safeguards, such as the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses used by our service providers, consistent with applicable data protection laws.
15. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time as the app evolves or as the law requires. When we do, we will revise the "Last Updated" date at the top of this page. Significant changes may also be highlighted in the app. Your continued use of the app after an update means you accept the revised policy.
