Quick checks
Most connection problems come down to Wi‑Fi or a permission. Start with these four checks.
Update & rate
The latest version has the newest fixes for TV makers’ updates. Enjoying the app? A rating really helps.
Quick checks
If Remote TV can’t find or control your TV, run through these first.
- Same Wi‑Fi. Your TV is on and connected to the same Wi‑Fi network as your iPhone or iPad. Guest networks and some mesh or “client isolation” settings stop devices from seeing each other.
- Local Network is on. Open iOS Settings ▸ Remote TV and make sure Local Network is switched on.
- No VPN. Turn off any VPN on your device while you use the remote — a VPN can hide your TV from the app.
- Restart. Unplug the TV for about a minute and plug it back in, restart your router if you can, then tap Search again in the app.
Finding and connecting to your TV
The app can’t find my TV
Remote TV looks for TVs on the Wi‑Fi network your device is using, so start with the quick checks. Then:
- Wake the TV with its own remote. A sleeping TV can take a few seconds to answer, so tap Search again.
- If your home has a guest network or more than one router, connect your device to the same network as the TV.
- On Roku, check that mobile apps are allowed to control it (see Roku below).
It says “You’re not on Wi‑Fi”
Remote TV talks to your TV over your home network, so it can’t work over mobile data. Join the same Wi‑Fi as your TV, then open the app again.
It asks me to allow local network access
Remote TV needs Local Network access to find and control your TV. Tap Open Settings (or open iOS Settings ▸ Remote TV) and turn on Local Network, then go back to the app.
It worked before, but now it says “Couldn’t connect”
Remote TV reconnects to your last TV when you open the app, as long as you’re on the same Wi‑Fi. If it can’t:
- Make sure the TV is on and on the same Wi‑Fi, then pick it again from the list.
- If you tapped Disconnect, the app waits for you to choose a TV again before it reconnects.
- If the app suggests it may have guessed the wrong brand, choose your TV’s brand yourself.
- Still stuck? In Recent, use Forget this TV, then connect and pair again.
The power button doesn’t turn my TV on
Turning a TV on from the app works over the network (Wake‑on‑LAN) on Samsung, LG, Android TV, Fire TV, Vizio, VIDAA and Xumo models that support it — and usually only after the app has connected to that TV once. Many TVs also need a setting turned on, for example Power On with Mobile on Samsung, TV On With Mobile or Mobile TV On on LG, or Remote start on Sony. Names vary by model and year.
Some TVs switch off their network connection completely after a while, or when unplugged, and can’t be woken over Wi‑Fi.
Does Remote TV work when I’m away from home?
No. Your iPhone or iPad needs to be on the same Wi‑Fi network as the TV. Remote TV doesn’t use infrared or Bluetooth.
First connection, brand by brand
The first time you connect, most TVs ask you to approve Remote TV. You only do this once per TV.
Samsung
A request appears on the TV in a few seconds. Select Allow with the TV remote within 30 seconds. If Remote TV was blocked, on the TV go to Settings ▸ General ▸ External Device Manager ▸ Device Connection Manager ▸ Grant Permissions, allow it, then try again.
LG (webOS)
Type the code shown on your TV. On some older LG TVs, a request appears instead — accept it with the TV remote. If the TV declined, try again and accept.
Roku
No pairing needed. If buttons don’t work, on the Roku open Settings ▸ System ▸ Advanced system settings ▸ Control by mobile apps and set Network access to Default or Permissive.
Android TV & Google TV
A code appears on the TV. Type it in the app. This includes Sony, TCL, Philips and other TVs running Android TV or Google TV.
Fire TV
A code appears on the TV. Type it in the app.
Apple TV
A code appears on the Apple TV. Type it in the app.
Vizio (SmartCast)
A code appears on the TV. Type it in the app.
VIDAA (Hisense, Toshiba…)
Type the 4‑digit code shown on your TV.
Xumo TV
Type the code shown on your TV. Some Xumo models are controlled through the Xumo platform’s online service and need an internet connection. If you reinstalled Remote TV and pairing fails, remove this device from Paired Devices on the TV, then connect again.
Code rejected? Start the connection again and type the code that’s on your TV screen right now.
Buttons, typing and apps
Some buttons don’t do anything on my TV
Not every TV accepts every command. For example:
- Channel up/down isn’t available on Roku, Fire TV or Apple TV.
- Number keys work on LG, Samsung, Android TV, VIDAA and Xumo TVs.
- Typing works on Samsung, LG, Roku, Fire TV, Android TV and Apple TV.
If a button that should work stops responding, check that the TV is still connected — the name at the top of the remote shows which TV you’re controlling.
How do I type on my TV?
When a search box or password field is open on the TV, tap the keyboard key on the remote, type on your device, and send. If your TV doesn’t accept typed text, use the arrows to type on the TV’s own on‑screen keyboard.
What’s the difference between Arrows, Touchpad and Numbers?
Arrows is a ring with OK in the middle, like a classic remote. Touchpad lets you swipe to move and tap for OK. Numbers is a number pad for channel numbers, with EXIT and delete keys. Switch between them at the top of the Remote tab.
How do I rename, disconnect or switch TVs?
Tap your TV’s name at the top of the Remote tab to Rename it or Disconnect. After you disconnect, choose another TV to connect to it. Your recent TVs appear in the list so you can switch back quickly.
The Apps tab is empty or my app is missing
Make sure the TV is connected, then pull down to refresh. Samsung, LG, Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV and VIDAA TVs show the apps installed on the TV; Android TV and Google TV show a list of popular apps; some TVs don’t allow other apps to open their apps, and then you’ll see “No apps to show”.
How do I remove all my TVs and pairings?
Open the Settings tab and tap Reset all pairings. Every TV will ask to be paired again the next time you connect. To remove just one TV, use Forget this TV in your recent TVs.
Screen mirroring with AirPlay
How do I mirror my screen?
- Connect your TV to the same Wi‑Fi you’re using.
- Open the Casting tab and tap Start mirroring, then pick your TV.
- If your TV shows a code, enter it when asked.
Screen mirroring in the app is part of Remote TV Pro.
My TV isn’t in the AirPlay list
Mirroring needs an Apple TV or a smart TV with AirPlay built in, on the same Wi‑Fi as your device. Wake the TV, and make sure AirPlay is turned on in the TV’s settings. Not every smart TV supports AirPlay — check your TV maker’s website if you’re not sure.
How do I stop mirroring?
Open Control Center, tap Screen Mirroring, then tap Stop Mirroring.
Can I cast to Chromecast or Google Cast?
No. Casting in Remote TV uses AirPlay only. You can still use Remote TV as a remote for Android TV and Google TV devices.
The picture lags, or a video won’t show
Mirroring quality depends on your Wi‑Fi. Move closer to your router, or pause large downloads on your network. Some apps and protected videos don’t allow screen mirroring; that’s set by the app, and Remote TV can’t change it.
Subscriptions and purchases
What’s free, and what does Pro include?
Finding and pairing with your TVs is free, and the free version includes a few remote commands so you can check that everything works. Remote TV Pro unlocks unlimited remote control, opening TV apps in one tap, and AirPlay screen mirroring. Pro is available as a subscription — with a free trial on selected plans — or as a one‑time Lifetime purchase. Prices are shown in the app. See the Terms of Use for details.
How do I cancel my subscription or free trial?
On your iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Choose Remote TV and tap Cancel Subscription. To avoid being charged, cancel at least 24 hours before the trial or current period ends. You keep Pro until the end of the period you’ve paid for. Deleting the app doesn’t cancel a subscription.
How do I restore my purchase on a new device?
Sign in with the same Apple Account you used to buy, open Remote TV, go to Settings ▸ Upgrade to Pro, and tap Restore. If you see “No previous purchases to restore”, check which Apple Account you’re signed in with. Purchases can’t be shared through Family Sharing.
How do I get a refund?
Purchases are processed by Apple, so refunds are too. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com, signed in with the Apple Account you used.
Does Remote TV collect my data?
Remote TV has no account and no ads. Your TVs and pairing data are saved on your device, and remote commands go straight to your TV over your network (except some Xumo TVs). We collect app usage and crash data, purchase records and App Store campaign data to run and improve the app. The Privacy Policy has the details.
