How can we help?

Browse the most common questions below, or reach out and our team will get you sorted. We're happy to help with adding accounts, codes, backups, Apple Watch, App Lock, the password vault, subscriptions and anything else about iAuthenticator.

Important — keep a backup.

iAuthenticator is zero-knowledge: your 2FA secrets are encrypted on your device and never reach our servers, so we cannot recover your codes if your device is lost without a backup. Turn on iCloud sync (PRO) or create an encrypted export, and keep the recovery codes each service gives you when you enable 2FA.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add a 2FA account?
In the service you want to protect (Google, GitHub, your bank…), open its security settings and choose to set up two-factor authentication with an authenticator app. The service shows a QR code — tap + in iAuthenticator and scan it with your camera. If you can't scan, choose manual entry and type the setup key instead. The account appears immediately and starts generating codes.
My codes are not accepted — what's wrong?
Time-based codes depend on your device clock being exact. Go to Settings ▸ General ▸ Date & Time and make sure Set Automatically is on. Also double-check you're reading the code for the right account, and enter it before the timer runs out. If it still fails, remove and re-add the account with a fresh QR code from the service.
How do I move my codes to a new iPhone?
With PRO, simply sign in to the same Apple ID on the new iPhone, install iAuthenticator and enable iCloud sync — your accounts restore automatically. Without PRO, use Settings ▸ Export in the app to create an encrypted, password-protected export (or export QR codes), then import it on the new device. Always confirm your accounts work on the new iPhone before erasing the old one.
What happens if I lose my iPhone?
If iCloud sync was on, install iAuthenticator on your new device with the same Apple ID and your accounts come back. If you had no backup, we're unable to recover your codes — that's a consequence of the zero-knowledge design. In that case use the recovery codes each service gave you when you enabled 2FA, or contact each service's account recovery. We recommend enabling a backup today.
How does iCloud backup & sync work? Is it private?
iCloud sync is a PRO feature. When enabled, your encrypted account data is backed up to your own iCloud account (managed by Apple) and kept in sync across your iPhone and iPad signed in to the same Apple ID. We never see the data — it goes from your device to your iCloud. Make sure iCloud is enabled for iAuthenticator in iOS Settings ▸ your name ▸ iCloud.
How do I get codes on my Apple Watch?
Codes on Apple Watch are a PRO feature. Install the iAuthenticator watch app, make sure Show codes on Apple Watch is enabled in the app's settings, and your accounts appear on your wrist automatically. If the watch shows no accounts, open the iPhone app once so it can push the latest data across.
How does App Lock (Face ID / Touch ID) work?
Turn on App Lock in the app's settings and iAuthenticator will require Face ID or Touch ID every time it opens, so your codes stay private even if someone else has your unlocked phone. Biometric checks are handled entirely by iOS — the app only receives a success or failure result and never sees your biometric data.
What is the password vault, and is it secure?
The Passwords tab lets you store logins, passwords and secure notes alongside your 2FA codes. Entries are stored encrypted on your device and protected by the same App Lock. The free version includes a limited number of saved passwords; PRO removes the limit.
Why does the app ask for camera or photo access?
Camera access is used only to scan 2FA QR codes when you add an account. Photo access is only requested if you save exported backup QR codes to your photo library. Everything is processed on your device — no images are uploaded to us.
Does iAuthenticator work offline?
Yes — completely. One-time codes are computed on your device from the stored secret and the current time, so they work in airplane mode, abroad, or with no signal at all. No iAuthenticator account or sign-in is ever required.
What does iAuthenticator PRO include?
PRO unlocks automatic iCloud backup & sync, codes on Apple Watch, an unlimited password vault and unlimited encrypted export. It's available as a weekly, monthly or yearly auto-renewing subscription — with a free trial when offered — or as a one-time Lifetime purchase. Full details are in our Terms of Use.
How do I cancel my subscription or free trial?
Subscriptions are billed and managed by Apple. Go to Settings ▸ your Apple ID ▸ Subscriptions ▸ iAuthenticator ▸ Cancel. To avoid being charged when a free trial ends, cancel at least 24 hours before the trial period ends. Cancelling keeps PRO active until the end of the period you've paid for.
How do I restore my purchase?
Open the PRO screen in the app and tap Restore Purchases, making sure you're signed in with the same Apple ID you used to subscribe or buy Lifetime. This also brings PRO to a new device after you upgrade phones.
The app is acting up — what should I do?
Try the basics first: close and reopen the app, make sure you're on the latest version from the App Store, and restart your iPhone. If iCloud sync seems stuck, confirm you're signed in to iCloud with a network connection and that iCloud is enabled for iAuthenticator. Still stuck? Email [email protected] with your device model and iOS version.
